Farm Food Blog

Jill Nienhiser

Farm Food Blog, written by Jill Nienhiser, is about sustainable small farms, farmers, farm foods, and farm producers—those wonderful plants and animals that give us nutrient-dense farm foods.

Jill grew up in Lexington, Missouri, with a somewhat better than average Standard American Diet. She did eat eggs, bacon, butter, liver, vegetables–but also sugary breakfast cereals, soda, candy, and convenience foods. She was trim throughout adolescence but then gained weight in college, when her activity level went down and her eating habits deteriorated.

Jill’s interest in farm food got started in 2000 when she and her housemate were on the Atkins diet, again, and Jill remarked, “Wouldn’t it be great if eating the food the earth provided would keep us healthy and fit?” The housemate suggested Jill read Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon, so she did. That led her to the 2001 WAPF Conference, where she heard a number of amazing lectures and bought a slew of books to continue her education. In the fall of 2001 she became webmaster of westonaprice.org and realmilk.com, a position she still holds.

Jill is also a communication consultant, writer, and new media advisor at Mind & Media, Inc., a communication consulting and media development company in Alexandria VA. She holds an M.A. in Liberal Arts from St. John’s College in Annapolis and Santa Fe, a B.S. in Speech from Northwestern University, and a diploma in Acting from the National Conservatory of Dramatic Arts. She enjoys cooking, gardening, reading, writing, acting, biking, and swimming.
